Can anyone give me an idea of what press packs should contain, and how they are presented. I imagine the more unusual the better, but there must be a core element to them.

Depends who it's pitched at ...
For example, I got hold of some of the PP when the THX-reworked Star Wars VHS vids came out (around 1995) ...
There were clips on beta for broadcast, and clips on VHS with BITC for reference.
Then one of the tapes has some unedited 'cutaway' footage of the THX process and a talking head of Lucas in response to certain questions.
Of course, because it was Star Wars it didn't really have to grab the attention.
Oh, and don't forget the acompanying Press Release which is generally in the format:
"XXX has happened, isn't that wonderful, with this cost/turnover, this star, that director, major company name drop etc" followed by "XXX (FTSE:XXX) is a blah company established for donkey years specialising in old tat to sell the public dressed up in a really swank press pack"
If you look on yahoo you can find 'real' press releases.
HTH?

i work in a cinema a get loads of press packs, sometimes we get a cd with some of the soundtrack on, clips and interviews. A couple of days ago we got 2 books, intended for kids, about the thomas the tank engine movie, it was a big cardboard book that had loads of pictures in. We get a lot of stills as well.
